Satyananda Yoga North is a network of teachers trained in the tradition of Satyananda Yoga/Bihar Yoga, who live in the North of England.

The intention of Satyananda Yoga North is to be the central hub of a wheel encompassing the northern counties of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Humberside, and extending to the Scottish borders, drawing together the Satyananda Yoga community of students and teachers. The aims are:

  • To develop and promote Yoga in the North of England, in particular Satyananda Yoga.
  • To provide encouragement and support for teachers of Satyananda Yoga.
  • To develop administrative structures and systems to facilitate the above.

Introducing the teachers:

Karma Sannyasin Jayadhara / Jane Cluley
jayadharaJayadhara attended her first Yoga class whilst at university in 1977, and her interest grew as she worked with many teachers and in a variety of styles.  She completed a BWY Diploma course and began teaching in 1988.In 1996 she enrolled on a Yoga Certificate course at the Bihar School of Yoga in India where she met her guru, and in 1999 went on to complete an MA in Yoga Philosophy. Following this, she has repeatedly offered service to Sivananda Math projects working to uplift village people in the surrounding areas. She was course director for the first Yogic Studies course offered by Satyananda Yoga Academy Europe and is a BWY Diploma Course Tutor. Passionate about making all aspects of yoga and ancient wisdom accessible to everyone, she has devised and run several yoga personal development courses open to all levels of experience. She has a particular interest in the field of mental health and her regular classes are in the Easingwold, York and Thirsk areas, further information is available at www.yogandshiatsu.org.uk.

Karma Sannyasin Vimuktananda / Sue Little
vimuktanandaVimuktananda met her teacher Swami Satyaprakash in Birmingham in 1986 and subsequently trained with her in 1991/93 to gain a Bihar School of Yoga qualification in teaching yoga. In the autumn of 1993 she attended the International Yoga Convention in Bihar, India and on the 5th November was initiated by Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati into Jignasu Sannyasa.From the year 2000 Vimuktananda took on the role of Centre Manager at the Satyananda Yoga Centre in Birmingham, and began teaching Yoga full-time. Also in the year 2000 she went to the Satyananda Ashram in Greece for a Yoga Festival with Swami Niranjanananda and on 1st April was initiated into Karma Sannyasa.Vimuktananda moved to West Yorkshire in 2004, and teaches general classes, one-to-one sessions for health management (including the yoga cleansing practices), day seminars and meditation courses. She is qualified to assess trainee yoga teachers (in the Satyananda tradition), and has also successfully completed the City & Guilds 7302 Certificate in Delivering Learning Stage One. From 2005 -2007 she assisted on the Mandala Yoga Ashram Teacher Training course. Also in 2005 she was accepted by the British Wheel as a teacher for IST days.

Karma Sannyasin Namrata Devi / Lesley Wood
namrata devi Namratadevi qualified as a teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga under the guidance of Sara Delamore in 2000 and during her training she was fortunate to come into contact with Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati. Inspired by The Satyananda Tradition she went on to do further study. ‘BWY Yoga for Children’ with Vedanta / Veronica Burningham, ‘Bihar Study 1&2 with Jayadhara / Jane Cluley, ‘Study and Sadhana Course’ with Swami Vedantananda Saraswati and ‘Yoga Nidra’ with Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati. During 2007 she completed the 'Satyananda Integration Course' with Swami Vedantananda Saraswati in London and Portugal and  this concluded with a visit to Rikhia Peeth, India, in December 2007 for the twelfth and final Sat Chandi festival. During her visit she was able to study 'Tattwa Shuddhi and Kriya Course', with Swami Sumitrananda Saraswati and Swami Satyadharma Saraswati. Namratadevi continues to have contact  with her teaches and has organised regular weekends and day programmes for them to bring Satyananda Yoga to Cleveland and North Yorkshire. She is also a Complementary Therapist and BWY Foundation Course Tutor and her special interests are personal empowerment and development. She teaches yoga to children in nurseries and schools, patients within a mental health hospital and a variety of community classes.

Poorna Sannyasin Swami Poornaseva / Phil Cullen
poornasevaBetween 2000 and 2008 Poornaseva (Phil Cullen) spent about seven years in Australia as a resident at the Satyananda ashram in Mangrove Creek, NSW. During that time he gained the Diploma in Satyananda Yoga Teaching, provided by Satyananda Yoga Academy which is an accredited course under the Australian Qualification Training Framework. Poornaseva went on to co-ordinate one of the Yogic Studies modules that make up the diploma and to teach on the diploma as well as teaching classes for ashram residents and visitors on courses or personal retreat. During this time Poornaseva also made regular trips to India to spend time at the Satyananda ashrams in Munger, Bihar and Rikhia, Jharkhand – the homes of Swami Niranjanananda and Swami Satyananda.Poornaseva returned to the UK in early 2008 and is currently involved with the Satyananda Yoga Academy Europe (SYAE) and its provision of courses in Yogic Studies. He is based in Liverpool and whilst not offering classes at the present time, is happy to be a point of contact for anyone in the North West who is interested in finding out more about Satyananda Yoga.Poornaseva has a particular interest in how yoga can help manage life with a chronic disease having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1997.

Karma Sannyasin Vishwa / Andrea Lascelles
vishwaVishwa accessed yoga while pregnant with her first child in 1995; initially she was taught by Janet Balaskas and Peter Walker at the Active Birth Centre in London. Vishwa later went on to be the first qualified leader of ‘Baby Massage and Movement’, under the guidance of Peter Walker in 1997.Vishwa became more intensely involved with yoga after the birth of her second child, when she moved up to Yorkshire in 1997, experiencing a variety of teaching from different traditions.In 2002 Vishwa completed a British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) Foundation course where she was first introduced to the Satyananda Tradition by Veronica Burningham (Vedanta), and later embarked on the BWY Teaching Diploma, under Pam Gorst; qualifying in July 2005, and has been teaching in the Harrogate area since May 2003.In 2005 Vishwa completed ‘Yoga for Children UK’ teacher training, a course set up by Swami Vedantananda and taught by Vedanta. In 2006 Vishwa completed the Yoga Nidra (T) course under the expert guidance of Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati at The Satyananda Yoga Centre in London. In the same year completed BWY module Ayurveda and Yoga with Master Ayurvedic Practitioner Cathy Mae Karelse.In 2007 Vishwa completed Satyananda Teacher Training Integration course under the guidance of Swami Vedantananda and Swami Pragyamurti.Vishwa is also a qualified Diagnostic Radiographer, graduating at The Royal London in 1986; and has been able to capitalise on her extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and alignment, to assist her in teaching.Through yoga and experiences in her own life Vishwa can offer people help with anxiety and stress management, and to access a more positive approach to their own life. Vishwa is currently working in mental health as well as teaching children and adult classes in a variety of centres in and around Harrogate.

Jignasu Sannyasin Hari Om / Hannah Penn
Hari OmHari Om first started practising yoga as a child in the 1970s with her mother.She has been teaching yoga full time since 1998.Over the years she has taught in adult education, schools and gyms as well as private classes.Hari Om trained to teach yoga with the British Wheel of Yoga; her diploma tutor was Sara Delamore.After having 2 children she completed the British Wheel of Yoga Pregnancy Module taught by Wendy Teasdill.She is committed to helping people make yoga part of their daily lives.She is very grateful to all her teachers, including Carol Southern, Swami Pragyamurti, Swami Vedantananda and Swami Satyaprakash.In 2007 Hari Om completed a further teacher training course in Satyananda Yoga. In 2008 Hari Om trained with Francoise Freedman to teach Postnatal yoga.

Jignasu Sannyasin Tapasvi / Chris Noon
tapasviTapasvi has been practicing Yoga for over fifteen years.His serious interest in Yoga began once he was exposed to the wisdom and clarity of the Satyananda tradition.Tapasvi was very fortunate to have Jean Lavers as his BWY diploma course tutor. Jeans’ teaching is heavily influenced by the work of the Vivekananda Foundation in Bangalore, an organisation dedicated to the practice of Yoga therapy and the development of Yoga as a tool for healing.In 2007 Tapasvi completed a further teacher training course in Satyananda Yoga. Tapasvi has taught Yoga in a variety of settings and with a wide variety of people.He has taught in adult education, schools, offices and gyms. He has taught in a retirement home for the elderly, and currently works with the ‘Healthy Living Partnership’ in North Sheffield. He has worked with the first team footballers at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.Tapasvi has had long term health problems and has found Yoga to be an uplifting and essential tool for the maintenance of a reasonably active life.As a teacher he has seen the huge impact that Yoga can have on the quality of life of those who practice it.

Nirvikalpa / Suzanne Ward
nirvikalpaNirvikalpa lives in Ulverston, South Cumbria and teaches yoga classes for adults, children and people with special needs. Nirvikalpa qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga in 1995. In 2006 Nirvikalpa completed the Yoga Nidra (T) course under the expert guidance of Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati at The Satyananda Yoga Centre in London. In 2007 Nirvikalpa had the good fortune to complete Satyananda Teacher Training Integration course under the guidance of Swami Vedantananda and Swami Pragyamurti.

Puja / Ute Neumann Pampus
pujaPuja (Ute Neumann-Pampus) started with Meditation when she was still at school in Germany. Qualified as a primary (and secondary) school teacher she worked as a teacher in schools in Germany, Denmark and Korea. She discovered Yoga when living in Korea. In England it became part of her life, a tool on her journey. Although first introduced to more Iyengar orientated Yoga and her qualifying as BWY Yoga teacher in 2005, she has moved since her Foundation Course in 2002 with Vedanta (Veronica Burningham) more and more into the Satyananda Tradition. “Yoga for Children” with Vedanta in 2005 and the Yoga Nidra Course with Swami Pragyamurti in 2006 and the Integration Course with Swami Vedantananda in 2007 mark some of the steps.The deep but subtle teachings of the Bihar School, the experiences of the benefits of yoga for body mind and spirit and her experiences with Yoga as a tool on the journey characterize her classes.

Vedanta / Veronica Burningham
vedantaVedanta is BWY trained qualifying in the early 1990’s, and later discovered Satyananda yoga. Vedanta completed the Yoga for Children Module in 1999 under the guidance of Swami Vedantananda; in 2000 she was trained by Swami Vedantananda to teach the Module for the BWY as well as Yoga for Children UK. Vedanta then went on to complete the Study and Sadhana course with Swami Vedantananda in 2001, followed by the Satyananda TTC, qualifying in 2003. Vedanta has taught IST’s for the BWY for a number of years, as well as a number of workshops based around the Bihar practices; and at the moment is developing a program on Conscious Ageing which she hopes will be accepted by the BWY as a Continued Professional Development (CPD). At the moment Vedanta is not teaching weekly classes, she does do occasional days and half days and private lessons.Vedanta would be happy to be a point of contact for anyone in the North East who is interested in finding out more about Satyananda Yoga.
